Pay attention to sight lines
Just as you look at your outfit from different angles, it’s a good idea to look at your room from different angles – specifically from other rooms. When designing a space, it’s a good idea to have a focal point be visible from the entrance to a space. If there are multiple entrances (or it’s open concept) things should be arranged in a way that makes sense for function, but also looks good from all angles.
Give furniture a bit of breathing room
It can be very easy to get carried away when it comes to adding new pieces. Plenty of seating space is important when designing entertaining spaces, but it’s important for people to be able to maneuver around with ease. Simply put, you don’t need to “fill” your space with furniture. It’s best to invest in fewer, high-quality pieces that stand out on their own.
Pay attention to rug size
When arranging furniture in a space with an area rug, there are three basic options: front on, all on, or all off. This is in reference to the furniture legs. Where you plan to place your furniture will help you determine the right rug size, but scale will also come into play. A small rug in a large space will look out of place, just as a large rug will overcrowd a small space.
