Grounding Your Space: Tips for Selecting a Rug

When designing spaces in your home, one of the most important – yet most often overlooked – elements is an area rug. Not only does a rug center and ground the space, it also provides a great opportunity to introduce pattern and color. Our Milwaukee furniture store is home to a wide variety of unique, hand-knotted rugs to suit any style. Here are a few tips from our designers to consider when selecting a rug!

Bigger is (usually) better

In most cases, the larger the rug the bigger the impact. For many living spaces, a standard 8×10 will work. However, for larger spaces and spaces with larger furniture, a 9×12 or 11×14 is often more optimal. As a general rule of thumb for bedrooms, an 8×10 will work for a queen size bed and a 9×12 will work for a king.

Choose a material based on traffic

Given that they’re on the ground and are walked on, durability is an important factor when selecting a rug. One of the most popular choices for both style and durability is wool. That’s a great choice for high traffic areas as it will withstand the test of time. More delicate materials, like silk or mohair, are beautiful, but best kept to more formal spaces that don’t see a ton of foot traffic.

Let your style speak

The options are seemingly endless when it comes to rug styles. If you’d prefer the rug to be more utilitarian, go with a neutral color or subtle pattern. If you want the rug to make a statement, don’t be afraid to select something with bold color! Rugs are also a great opportunity to introduce some texture to the space. No matter what you select, let your style shine! Think of a rug as a piece of art for the floor, because that’s what it is!
